Frequently Asked Questions

Below are listed some of the most common questions that people ask when they are considering booking a cruise holiday. Please remember that the services, arrangements and inclusions offered as part of a cruise vacation can vary across cruise ships. It is recommended that you contact your booking agent or the cruise line itself to answer any important questions that you may have.

What is included in the cost of the cruise?
Whether you are booking a fully blown South Pacific cruise or a more modest trip around the Kimberley, the fees you pay should include your onboard accommodation, all of your main meals and whatever activities and entertainment you might enjoy whilst you're on the boat. After that, you really need to talk directly with your travel agent or the cruise operator. At the time of writing this, with the world in economic melt-down, booking a cruise is a seriously attractive holiday option. This is because competition for tourist dollars has led to something of a price war in the cruising industry with cruise companies offering great deals such as absolutely all-inclusive cruise packages where everything you eat, drink and take part in whilst part of the trip is covered in the initial booking price. Obviously, this makes an ocean cruise an increasingly popular holiday choice as you know exactly what your vacation will cost you before you leave the port.

If I purchase extras on board the ship, how do I pay for them?
It is usual for any additional costs that you may incur whilst enjoying your cruise will be charged to your account – just like staying in a hotel.

Should I tip the ship's crew?
Again, this can vary between cruise operators. In general, tipping is expected. Some cruise companies include a percentage for tips in the fee you are charged on booking your cruise. Others may offer you the option of adding a set amount to your on board account for the duration of your trip. Check with your booking agent or with the cruise operator prior to committing to your cruise as it can be an unexpected expense that you may need to budget for.

Do I need a passport? Even if I'm booked on an Australian cruise liner?
If you are planning an ocean cruise to a foreign destination you will need to have a valid passport. For the best and most up to date information, please check out www.passports.gov.au

Will I require a visa?
It depends on where you are going. Check with your travel agent, the cruise company or the consulate/embassy of the particular countries where your cruise will be docking.

Should I take out travel insurance?
Yes. Neither Australian Medicare nor any private health insurance that you might have will cover you if you get sick or have an accident once you set foot on board your cruise ship. It may surprise you to know that this is true even if you do not disembark ship at any overseas destinations.

Will I need any vaccinations?
This really varies from country to country. Your GP should be able to tell you if any of the destinations on your cruising schedule demand a vaccination certificate or not. Please note that some overseas authorities are extremely strict about vaccination requirements for tourists – even cruise passengers who only get off their boat for a few hours sightseeing – and might prevent you from setting foot ashore if your vaccinations are not current. The government website www.smarttraveller.gov.au is a great resource for all questions related to foreign travel.

Will there be medical professionals available on the cruise ship?
Any cruise ship of a decent size will have a fully blown medical centre, complete with trained doctors and nurses, available for the use of passengers. If you have any special medical conditions that need specific care, you should inform your travel agent or the cruise operator before you make your ocean cruise booking to make sure that the boat you are looking at has the facilities you need.

I have a special diet. Will I be catered for on board?
Check with your travel agent or the cruise ship before you book, but most dietary requirements should be catered for as a matter of course on board.

I'd like to pick up my ocean cruise some distance from my nearest port. Do I have to book my own flights?
If you book through a company that specialises in organising cruises, they should be able to arrange flights for you as well. However, if you decide to book your flights yourself, make sure you leave at least 4 hours between your flights arrival and the cruises estimated departure time to be sure that you make it to the boat on time.

The cruise brochure lists loads of on board activities and entertainment. I'm not really a group participation kind of person. Do I have to take part in everything?
Not at all. The beauty of the modern cruising experience is that you can pick and mix the pieces that suit you. If you don't fancy the spin class on the main deck at 6am, don't do it. The sports, games and entertainment are there for you to enjoy, only if you want to.
